Tilt's Story

The third annual Tilt international improv festival will take place 1-3 October, at the Vaba Lava theatre in Tallinn. This is the party of spontaneous theatre! All the Estonian improvisers will come together to showcase their best improv. Also, great improvisers from Europe and the USA will come to show the Estonian audience what good improv can be really like! There will be fun, excitement, anticipation and lots of unexpected turns in the air. Because that’s the way Tilt is. And it’s definitely worth being part of ;)

This year’s Tilt is brought to you by Improgrupp Jaa!, Kogu Moos, and Eesti Improteater.

Feedback

The participants of the festival said this:

"I’ve been coming to Tallinn for improv for nearly 5 years. It’s amazing to see how Estonian improv has grown in that time! A huge part of the reason the Estonian improv community has expanded (and will continue to expand) is thanks to the amazing people behind TILT, who have combined the warmth and personality of Estonia with the enthusiasm of people who love what they do, creating a welcoming and nurturing festival experience!

I’ve been honored to take part in this festival twice, and look forward to the next opportunity!

What fun!"

„As an international participant in Tilt 3, I felt like I was given a VIP access into the micro-cosmos of Tallinn’s improvising world, seeing the similarities and differences within it and when compared to Bucharest’s situation.

Tilt 3 was a forward-moving experience for me, a great ice-breaker, as I got to teach in English for the first time, and perform my duo show with Axel in English for the first time. The audience was very supportive, as well as the workshop attendants, and I felt both experiences were rewarding and full of learning points.“

Monica Anastase, Improvisneyland (ROU)

„TILT Tallinn. In one of the least populous countries of the E.U. this festival has magic! The “warm” feeling of the hosts and participants is contagious and everyone you come in contact with is friendly and wanting to know and get more from this experience. I liked a lot the place where we stayed, the room mates and the city, but most of all: The people!“

Axel Moustache, Improvisneyland (ROU)

„What a fun mix of people with wildly different improv styles! It was a privilege to spend time in such a beautiful city with such beautiful improvisers. This is a well-organized festival that’s off the beaten path. Well worth the trip.“

Kevin Miller (USA)

„Tilt is a fantastic impro festival that I would recommend to any impro groups in Europe. This is an outstanding opportunity to perform in English and to meet nice improvisers of all over Europe. The welcoming of the managing team and the audience are amazing. The beers are cheap and the food is incredible. And in addition, see some shows in Estonian language is so unique. It is like discover the elves life…
Thank you so much guys for your invitation! This was a great time to be part of this adventure.

French Kisses from Paris.“

Loïc Colin, la Compagnie d’Improvisation Eux (FRA)

„We had an absolute blast! Thank you so much for having us! You guys organised a brilliant festival!“

IMPROSSIIVNE / KOGU MOOS (EST)

Hello"! / "Bad Lock

The opening of the International Improv Festival Tilt will be done this year by two of the freshest Estonian improv theatres – Improssiivne with their performance “Hello!” and Kogu Moos with their performance “Bad Lock”.

“Hello!”

Improssiivne welcomes the audience and other improv groups with short-form games, where they create different characters and styles. The show will present you well-known games like „Why are you late“, one-liners like „I like my men/women as I like my..“ and lots more!

Improssiivne is a new group in two ways. First, they are a relatively young group with young members. Second, it’s their first time at an international improv festival – thus the name „Hello!“. „With this show our wish is to officially greet you for the first time.“ – say the members.

“Bad Lock”
Improv troupe Kogu Moos presents You a long-form show with their own personal flavour of it. With the help of the audience we will create a unique secret. The secret will be locked up in a safe place. But oh no, it turned out to be a bad lock! Now the secret seeks to get out and our brave improvisers have to manage with all of it. Will the secret’s attempts be foiled or will it succeed to turn our character’s lives upside down? Let’s see, who will prevail…

Improv troupe Kogu Moos was born with the year of 2015, when in the company of young enthusiastic improv hobbyists there was a spread of feeling that just jamming is not enough anymore and the dose of improv wisdom needs to be raised.
Despite the fact that every one of us has rather different background, our ways found here the crossing point and the enticement to go jointly to discover improv hunting ground that none of us could reject. The symbiosis of ourselves may bring daylight to quite a few novel and interesting or cozy and familiar tastes of life.

Harold

The legendary improv guru Del Close, in collaboration with Charna Halpner, developed the format of Harold in USA in the 1970s. The members of Ruutu10 have been very lucky to learn the format in its birthplace – the iO theatre in Chicago under the supervision of local improv masters. Now the responsibility falls to them to introduce this format that has very long traditions also to the Estonian audience.

To start the show the audience will be asked for one word only. Inspired by that single word the group will draw ideas and subjects for the show. In the following scenes and games the group will create worlds where they discover, develop, and explore these subjects in more detail. If all goes well, at the end of the play the worlds will intertwine and the ideas, scenes and games will interlace into a smooth pattern.
Ruutu10 welcome you to join them at the discovery trip!

Ruutu10 (The 10 of Diamonds) is a comedy troupe, that believes in the liberating power of laughter.
We have studied improvisation and comedy in America and Europe under the guidance of the best instructors in their field.

Ruutu10 consists of ten young improvisers who have been playing together since the beginning of 2013. During this time we have regularly organized public performances in Tallinn and Tartu as well as elsewhere across the country. In addition we organize public improv jams where everyone can play improv games in a safe environment.

Ruutu10 is dedicated to constant self-improvement. Aside from training on a regular basis we update our knowledge base by reading books on improvisation and studying under the best improvisers in the world. Among other things we have all completed the five week improvisation intensive course at the prestigious iO Theater in Chicago.

Ruutu10 believes that laughter is liberating because:

– Deep laughter is only possible when we feel good and safe
– It relieves us of tension and brings out the best in us
– Laughter is a creative way to learn about love and cooperation

An Ancient Hero

Estonians know a few strong and clever ancient heroes – Kalevipoeg, Suur Tõll, also Kaval-Ants (all Estonian folklore heroes) etc. But there are a lot of characters in these folk tales, who never get to be the main characters. We will pick one of the characters from a folk tale or a fairytale, from audience suggestions, and give this character a chance to be the hero of that story.

Improv theatre IMPEERIUM (Empire) originated from the first professional improv group in Estonia in 2014. Thus, event though Impeerium is still young, it’s actors already have a six years of experience with improv. The members of the group are all professional actors, who, in addition to being members of Impeerium, are also part of drama troups in other Estonian theatres or work as freelancers in various theater, television and film projects. In addition to actors, there are also talented musicians and lightning designers in the group, who all help to spread love for improv all across Estonia.

The Imperials entertain audience with two-act performances, create excitement at preordered shows and arouse fantacies in improv workshops. In improv nobody knows what is going to happen, but everything is possible! And that is one of the reasons why the group loves improv in all it’s shapes and forms.

The Latin word ‘imperium’ means power. Improv theatre Impeerium wants to conquer the heart of every Estonian and with that create another country on the world map full of love for improv, where people appreciate the value of cooperation and creativity and where imagination is power.

“A couple of everything” is a duo show that has a rather theatrical approach to the lives of three different sets of characters. The performers start from an audience suggestion, then monologue about it for a while, and then start improvising the three different stories, each of them having three episodes.

Improvisneyland is the oldest group of improv in Romania whose cast has never changed – its seven members have been the same in seven years. Axel and Monica are professional actors, and they are proud to have performed at the world famous Chicago Improv Festival this year.

History Under the Influence

Inspired by the popular series Drunk History, a group of sober improvisers try to keep up with an extremely drunk narrator in “History Under the Influence.” Kevin spends a couple of hours before the show getting hammered, and then stumbles onstage and asks the audience for a historical event they’d like to see performed. The resulting re-enactment is insane, hilarious, and occasionally accurate.

Kevin Miller has performed, coached, and taught improv in Austin, Texas for over 13 years. He is an instructor for the Merlin Works Institute of Improvisation at the ZACH Theatre in downtown Austin, and he has performed with troupes around the US and as far afield as Tampere, Finland. Kevin owns a dog, a cat, and four chickens.

Emotions

Do you want to impress the audience with more than laughter? Do you want them to empathize with your characters, to be captivated and encouraging? Improvised scenes can be so much deeper and meaningful if you allow yourself to express emotions in a realistic and vulnerable way.
Using techniques learned partly in their acting formative years, and partly at the Chicago Improv Festival, the trainers will gently lead the improvisers in this class to relaxed, truthful scenes, in the style of TJ and Dave.

For improvisers with some experience.

Axel and Monica have been sharing their improvisation skills and techniques since 2010. Regular workshops, corporate teambuilding, business training, they’ve done it all. And still, they still feel like they have a lot to learn from every group of improvisers they come into contact with.
